FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

eneral

Q: What kind of game is Sins of a Solar Empire?

A: It is a real-time strategy game that is designed to combine the depth of a turn-based game with the speed of real-time. It focuses on letting players build a strategy instead of how fast they can click on things.

Q: What’s the difference between Rebellion, Trinity, Diplomacy and Entrenchment?

A: Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is the upcoming standalone expansion to the franchise. It will contain all of the previous content and much more. Trinity is the currently available bundle pack of the original Sins of a Solar Empire and includes the Entrenchment and Diplomacy micro-expansions.

Q. Why make an expansion? Why not a sequel?

A. While the Iron Engine is extremely flexible, there’s certain technologies and features we feel would be required to make a true sequel to Sins of a Solar Empire. Rebellion will certainly contain enough new content and features that it could be a sequel, but we’re calling it an expansion.

Q. Is Sins of a Solar Empire hard to play?

A. Not at all; it’s a simple game to learn but can take a long time to truly “master.” Both the manual and the in-game Tutorials will help new players pick up the basics.

Q. What are the system requirements?

A. The Iron Engine is quite flexible and is able to take advantage of both newer and older hardware.

For Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion, the requirements are:

Minimum Requirements -

  • Windows 10 / 8 / Windows 7 SP1

Q. What exactly do you mean by the phrase “real-time space strategy?”

A. This means that Sins of a Solar Empire is primarily a real-time strategy game, but incorporates some of the best features of turn-based 4X space strategy games. One could say it’s an “RT4X” game.

Real-time refers to the continuity of play. Most space strategy games are at least partially turn-based, meaning that each player must wait for every other play to complete their turns before the game can continue. Sins of a Solar Empire is played entirely in real-time, so players compete simultaneously and never wait for others.

Q. What do you mean by the phrase “unrivalled scale?”

A. The story and lore of Sins of a Solar Empire begin over 10,000 years before the player enters the game, involve entire civilizations, and are planned well into the future. Gameplay objectives include grand concepts like conquering planets with fleets of starships and taking control of entire solar systems.

Incredible distances and large size differences are used to create a sense of awe to the player and to introduce new strategic elements.

Q. Can players design their own ships?

A. No, ship design would be too time-consuming for a real-time strategy game. However, certain ships (capital ships and titans) gain experience over time and can be leveled-up to unlock other powerful abilities.

Q. Is there ground combat?

A. No, RTS style ground combat is outside the scope of Sins of a Solar Empire.

Q: How can players control their ships?

A: Movement of ships is as simple as selecting the vessels you want to move and right-clicking on their destination. The game’s AI will take care of the rest for you. For players who want finer control over their ships, move orders can be queued up with the shift key and ships can even move to arbitrary positions in 3D space using the ~ key.

Q: Is there a single-player campaign?

A: No, Sins of a Solar Empire encourages players to create their own course of events through a sandbox mode. Scenario maps are also included that set the stage for epic conflicts, along with a random map generator. Players can also craft their own maps in-game or by using the included Galaxy Forge tool.

Q: What kinds of ships are there in the game?

A: Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion includes six classes of ships (in order of size/power): titans, capital ships, cruisers, frigates, corvettes and fighters/bombers. There are also starbases and a number of other structures that can be built around planets.
